Mandela sculpture

This is a sculpture by Marco Cianfanelli of Johannesburg. My dad sent this link to me. The photos below are from the site.

South African artist Marco Cianfanelli has constructed a monument to recognize the 50 year anniversary of peace activist and politician Nelson Mandela's capture by the apartheid police in 1962. Mandela's profile spans 50 steel columns measuring 21.32 and 29.52 feet (6.5 and 9 meters) high, each anchored to the concrete-covered ground. The shape and form of the sculpture are representative of the leader's 27 years behind bars for his efforts to bring equal rights and governmental representation to the once racially divided nation. The statue of the nobel prize winner has been erected in Howick, a town located 56 miles (90 kilometers) south from the city of Durban in the countryside of the southernmost African country.

photographic memory

Prepare yourself to be amazed. This artist, Stephen Wiltshire, is autistic and can draw city skylines after taking one helicopter tour! Unbelievable, right?! These photos show him working on the New York City skyline.

I have seen this pop up on facebook recently but the article I found was from 2009. He has done this with Tokyo, Rome, and Hong Kong. I am seriously in awe!

This takes my breath away.

I have been so busy recently and stressed because I feel behind in almost every aspect of my life. When I saw this on Design Mom this morning I stopped for a few minutes to fully appreciate it and I could feel it lift me up.

Last year I wrote about our portrait of Freckles... this year I ordered a portrait of Monster. He is Nadia's constant companion.

Jennifer Maher does great work and I can't wait to order our next portrait. Maybe it will be Matias' first lovey. So far he's happy stuffing his fist in his mouth but surely he will advance to the lovey stage soon.

By now you may have heard about Google's Art Project. Probably because of my background in art history, I am blown away by it. You can tour museums (like MoMa featured below) and zoom in (way in) on major works.

It's fascinating. A tool I could play with for hours!

stone sculpture

I found links to Thea Sunshine Alvin's stone sculptures on Studio G. I really enjoy looking at well-designed outdoor spaces for design inspiration.

I love the lightness and airiness of these arches even thought they're made with stone. There's just something so happy about them.

whimsical paintings

During a recent trip to Rockport, MA I ran across some fun and colorful paintings by the talented Lauri Kaihlanen.







I wanted to buy a whole bunch of these small prints and cover my daughter's wall with them. I had my heart set on the lion or the giraffes until I saw the funky penguin and the bicycling turtles. So much fun! In the end I decided to some day bring my daughter to the studio and let her pick out a few of her favorites. Maybe when we have more space and she has her own room!

Check out these insane pencil carvings from artist Dalton Ghetti. (I saw them on telegraph.co.uk) I love the tiny alphabet. Some of the others I can hardly believe were made from a pencil.

I found this artist, Jennifer Maher, who creates gorgeous custom portraits of favorite toys and loveys.


This is Freckles, my daughter Nadia's most favorite companion. We have been through a lot together and I thought this would be a great way to honor him. I have grand plans to decorate her room with more toy portraits over the years. How cool would it be to look back at your childhood through gorgeous paintings of old friends?
