poster design

I've been working on a lot of trade show graphics recently - large-scale banners and stands. Design at that scale is quite different from the kinds of things I normally work on - small hand-held reports and brochures. It got me thinking about poster design. I've never had a client ask me to design a poster (the trade show graphics are as close as I get). In art school posters were not exactly my strong point but I knocked one out of the park in an early typography class. We had to design a type-only poster about a type designer.

Eric Gill, this one's for you: (see a full-size .pdf here)

I worked on this for a class in the fall of 2003. Not much of what I did then stands up now but I still adore this poster. If I could change one thing I would take out the hyphen. Not bad for some of my earliest design work!

pretty recycling

I love the Paper Source blog even though I can't imagine ever having enough time to make any of the beautiful things they post about. Still, it's a source of inspiration. And a pretty one at that.

These hearts are made from recycled Paper Source catalogs.

organization

I saw this on Design Mom and thought it was brilliant. I went out and bought multi-colored binder clips for this very purpose. It works great! If my desk were cleaner I would even photograph them as proof. For now you will have to take my word for it.

scala sans

A few weeks ago my friend Beth asked me what my least favorite fonts are. I could only think of Comic Sans in that moment. It turns out I don't have a lot of font hate. I do, however, have a lot of font love. My favorite font has been a favorite for a while now. Scala Sans.

Her question got me thinking about how I determine which fonts I love. When I was working on my resume I spent a lot of time looking at the letter J. I love when the uppercase J does not have a cross on top. It looks clean and simple and elegant. It looks very natural that it descends below the baseline just as it does when I'm writing my name.

When I started my company I immediately went to scala sans for my logo and identity. It's versatile, quiet, and modern. Check out the G in my blog header. Does it get any better than that?? Really.

spring!!!

I've decided that the weather affects my work. I am drawn to soft yellows and pale greens right now. I'm even wearing pink instead of black or navy blue!

I adore these gorgeous spring days. It really makes winter worth it. Now if only we could have leaves again!
